So on wider scale domain name is like getting a number from a big company which is known as World Wide Web or Internet.

How to buy a domain or domain name? When someone purchases a domain name, he does not actually buy it, he gets it on rent for a particular period but he is considered owner of the name unless he stops paying rent for it. A domain name fee is paid at least for one year; it can also be paid for multiple years some people pay for 5 years or 10 years together to avoid the hassle of renewing every year at the right time. As in case of no payment he might lose domain name, he got registered for.

What is meant by domain name registry? It is basically a database containing all the domain names registered in a top level domain. A registry operator (Network Information Center- NIC) is part of Domain Name System (DNS) of internet that holds the databases of all the domain names and generates region files related to those domain names which finally converts the domain names to IP addresses. Each NIC is an organization that manages the registration of Domain names within the top-level domains for which it is responsible, controls the policies of domain name allocation, and technically operates its top-level domain. It is potentially distinct from a domain name registrar.

Domain names are managed under a hierarchy headed by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), which manages the top of the DNS tree by administrating the data in the root name servers. Domain name registries maintain the domain registration information having bond with domain registrars to provide registration services to the public. The end user is given authority to select a registrar who will be responsible then for the domain selected by the user as designated registrar. Only the designated registrar may modify or delete information about a domain name in registry database.
